How to prepare for your tattoo removal session and ensure optimal recovery

At Best Tattoo Removal, your safety, comfort, and results are our top priorities. Following proper pre- and post-care instructions is essential for achieving the best outcome with minimal side effects. Here’s everything you need to know to prepare for your session and optimise healing.

Before your treatment: how to prepare

Stay hydrated and healthy
  • Drink plenty of water – a healthy lymphatic system clears ink more efficiently.
  • Eat nutrient-rich foods to support skin healing.
  • Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol – these slow down ink clearance.
Protect your skin from sun exposure
  • Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning for at least 2 weeks pre-treatment.
  • If you must be in the sun, use SPF 50+ with zinc oxide.
  • No spray tans, self-tanners, or sunburned skin in the treatment area.
Medications and skincare precautions
  • Avoid NSAIDs (Aspirin, Ibuprofen) for 48 hours before treatment (can increase bruising).
  • Do not use retinol, acids, or harsh skincare products on the area.

Day of your appointment

  • Arrive with clean, dry skin – no lotion, makeup, or deodorant on the tattoo area. Carefully shave treatment area if it has hair.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing that won’t rub against the treated area.
  • Avoid excessive caffeine on the day of treatment (may increase sensitivity).

After your treatment: what to expect and how to heal

Following proper aftercare ensures a smooth recovery, faster healing, and better results.

Keep the treated area clean and dry
  • Remove any bandages within 1–3 hours and let the skin breathe.
  • Gently wash the area with cool water (avoid harsh soaps or scrubbing).
  • Pat dry – do not rub or over-moisturise.
Avoid for 48 hours post-treatment
  • No hot showers, saunas, swimming, or excessive sweating.
  • No tight clothing that may rub the treated area.
  • No picking, scratching, or exfoliating – let blisters and scabs heal naturally.
Managing swelling, redness and blisters
  • Redness and swelling are normal and should subside within a few days.
  • If swelling occurs, apply an ice pack for 20 minutes at a time.
  • Blisters may form – if they become larger than a 25mm, contact Marissa for further instructions.
  • If itching occurs, apply a small amount of Aquaphor or vitamin E oil.

Long-term healing and faster ink clearance

  • Hydration is key – drink plenty of water to help your body flush ink particles.
  • Stay active – regular exercise stimulates lymphatic drainage and speeds up ink removal.
  • Always use SPF 50+ – sun exposure can cause hyperpigmentation and scarring.
  • Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol – these slow down the removal process.

Healing timeline and next treatment

  • Day 1-3: redness, mild swelling, possible pinpoint bleeding.
  • Day 4-7: blistering (if any) starts healing, scabs may form.
  • Week 2-4: tattoo begins gradually fading as ink clears.
  • Next session in 8 weeks – waiting allows your body to clear broken-down ink efficiently.
